Production Readiness — Design Summary & Verification Checklist

← Production Roadmap · Back to Summary

This chapter consolidates the implementation status into a practical final-readiness view.

Completion snapshot

  • Issue scope: Deterministic DMA engine in Verilog for Stratix V GS (PCIe, scheduler, FIFOs, NVMe interface)
  • Status: ✅ Complete
  • Completion date: 2026-01-11 (with PCIe Hard IP unlock integration updates documented on 2026-01-14)

Deliverables status

Core implementation

  • ✅ Top-level integration and PCIe boundary (fpga_top.v, pcie_endpoint.v, bar_control.v)
  • ✅ DMA engine module set (dma_top, desc fetch, scheduler, addr gen, read/write, completion, fifos)
  • ✅ NVMe interface modules (nvme_mmio.v, nvme_queue.v)
  • ✅ Interrupt path (msix_ctrl.v)
  • ✅ Utility modules (skid_buffer, sync/async FIFOs, round-robin arbiter)

Documentation and automation

  • ✅ README.md (architecture, integration, build/test flow)
  • ✅ DESIGN_METRICS.md (statistics, complexity, estimates)
  • ✅ validate_syntax.sh (automated syntax validation)
  • ✅ HARDWARE_INTEGRATION.md and PCIe unlock docs/tooling (pcie-3-hip-unlock/*)

Production-readiness checklist

A) Implementation quality

  • Core modules implemented per scoped architecture
  • Parameterized interfaces used across major blocks
  • Inline module/interface documentation present
  • Known limitations explicitly tracked

B) Validation quality

  • Syntax validation completed (Icarus Verilog / SystemVerilog 2012)
  • Documented code-review fixes applied
  • Baseline verification scaffolding in repo
  • Full functional simulation matrix complete
  • Gate-level simulation complete

C) Hardware integration readiness

  • Stratix V Hard IP integration path documented
  • PCIe unlock workflow documented (Linux + Windows)
  • Platform Designer/wrapper references included
  • Final Hard IP instance swap completed in production build
  • NVMe PHY fully validated on target hardware

D) Sign-off readiness

  • FPGA synthesis complete on target configuration
  • Timing closure achieved
  • Board-level hardware validation complete
  • End-to-end throughput/latency benchmarking finalized
  • Failure-mode and recovery validation complete

Known gaps to close before production sign-off

  1. Complete production Hard IP integration and board-specific timing closure.
  2. Finalize write-path arbitration/back-pressure behavior under stress.
  3. Run comprehensive simulation and hardware campaigns (including fault injection).
  4. Validate NVMe physical/controller behavior with real devices.

Final assessment

The project is implementation-complete and documentation-strong, with a clear path to production. Remaining work is primarily in full hardware integration, timing closure, and exhaustive verification rather than missing architectural building blocks.
